By the mid 1830s, the natural figure was displayed primarily at the waist, which was tightly corseted. The shoulders and legs were obscured with massive sleeves and full skirts (both heavily padded). Despite the growing volume of the skirt, hems were usually well short of the ground, giving the wearer a light, floating appearance.
