A cherry-red sleeveless silk cocktail dress with balloon skirt, sacque-back style, and red bows at the bosom and waist.

Cocktail Dress

c. 1958–1963 | American, silk

In 1957, Christian Dior introduced balloon skirts into his collection. The following year, Cristóbal Balenciaga did the same. The style was not universally accepted, but it became a much-imitated novelty.

This example is a fine copy of a French original. An eccentric feature is the sacque-back style revived from 18th century fashion (as seen in the robe à la française included in this exhibit).
